Six months Zenerife

Six months ago we introduced our project “Zenerife” and have been enjoying it since the start. Looking back I can say that basically (almost) everything has turned out above our expectations and that the fears we had regarding certain matters have not materialized or at least eventually turned out to be very manageable. So let’s kick off with a lesson I learned (and probably will learn over and over again for the rest of my life).

I have known a great many fears, but most of them never happened.

One of our fears was if our friends & family would come and visit us if we would make the move? Well we are very grateful for the visits we had so far! Since January we have had lots of visitors and with them lots of fun, profound conversations and… some more lots of fun 🙂 Thank you guys!

Another fear was whether we could combine this heavy ‘holiday agenda’ with our own ‘agendas’. Fortunately we have had very flexible and considerate visitors over. Everyone had their own rental car, which enabled them to explore the island by their own as well. So we could ‘chip in’ whenever we wanted.

One of our obligations is study Spanish. Our teacher, David, teaches us at our own place, which is a great luxury and has freed up travel time for us. However, as David is a very dedicated teacher this additional free time (and more :)) has been directly reinvested into our homework. Kim and I felt some resistance towards having quite some homework at first, however looking back the last two months we have definitely improved our level.

Next to that we remain focussed at Zen living, which implies enjoying the moment, work effectively, healthy eating (including an occasional beer :)), and doing sports!

These ‘Zen objectives’ are great to share with our visitors. We have done some epic cycling, hiking and kiting recently! For me that’s truly energizing and it feels great!

Next to that we have finalized all formalities to set up our companies in Spain, become ‘residente’ and buy our own car (instead of renting all the time). Having all these things properly set-up enables us once again to be more time efficient.

Last but not least I have also bought a motor to discover the island(s) with Kim and we both fell in love with her. Two weekends ago we visited La Gomera (a small and beautiful island next to Tenerife) and it was great to experience the FREEDOM it gives to cruise around and enjoy the stunning nature.

Best thing is that we can combine these beautiful trips, sports activities and chill out moments at nice terraces in the sun with our study and work. An important cause of this is that Tenerife is significantly cheaper than living in Amsterdam (65% cost of living) and next to that we remain focussed at working efficiently and delivering good quality, which fortunately pays off.

Returning back to fear, of course I had my sleepless moments the last six months while making this transition. In my case especially whether it would all work out financially (maybe a disadvantage of being a former banker?), but as we have the freedom of not setting an alarm clock a lesser night sleep is quite manageable. In summary, I would rate our adventure so far with 9 out of 10 and I trust that this will continue to be so!

My focus will be on talking to people already doing what we are doing / want to do as I learned that “the fastest way to do the things you don’t think can be done is to hang around with people already doing them.” Let’s get inspired again!

Hopefully we are able to inspire you as well to do what you love and love what you do, because that’s what life is all about!
